The commuter's guide to beauty tools
*Introduction about how I interned in New York City last summer in the fashion industry*
Long story short, I spent a lot of time on trains, subways, taxis, Ubers, you name it. Ever hear someone get off a plane and say “I gotta go wash the plane off me”? Well when you work in NYC in the summer you feel that way constantly - it’s hot, it’s sticky and it sometimes smells weird. Thankfully, I had access to some of the best beauty tools for remedying those less-than-decent environmental impacts. And so I bring you: the commuter’s guide to beauty.
1. Laura Mercier translucent loose setting powder
2. Retractable all-over face brush
Ok, in all honesty, I didn’t find this stuff until my internship was over - but I wish I had. With a little powder on the end of a fluffy brush, it takes all the oil and shine out of your skin and gives you a matte finish: something hard to come by after sitting on a train all day
There is something to be said for not looking streaky. But when you’re getting ready in the dark at 5 a.m., sometimes that luxury falls through the cracks. Under the florescent lights of the train, though, you see those streaks in blinding magnitude and sometimes blending with your fingers just doesn’t cut it.
3. Roller-ball perfume
4. Oil-blotting sheets
It doesn’t matter what fragrance you wear, having a little something extra in your purse never hurt anyone. Plus, we’ve all had those moments where our eyes go wide and we think, “wait, do I smell?”
To the same effect as the the setting powder, but taking up less room, these little strips of rice paper soak up the oil and leave you with a matte finish.
5. Mints
6. A lip gloss that isn’t heavy
Maybe this isn’t a traditional beauty product, per say, but walking into work after just finishing that morning coffee is RISKY. Gum is loud, pop a mint.
I never used lip gloss; never in high school, never in college, especially never during the summer. It always felt heavy on my lips and overly shiny. That was until I discovered the Gucci lip gloss. It is super lightweight and isn’t drying. A+.
7. Hair elastics that don’t crease your hair
8. S’well bottle
Yup, it’s hot on the subway, thanks for asking! After spending all morning blowing dry, straightening, or curling our hair, the last thing we need is all that work getting a big dent across our neck. These elastics do not dent and keep the hair off your face during your ride on the 6.
A little more about getting overheated… regardless of where you’re commuting, you will get dehydrated. It is mad rush to get to work and you will rarely find time to stop to grab water. The S’well bottle keeps liquids hot for 12 hours (if you’re into coffee or tea) and keeps liquids cold for 24 hours: yes, I have tested both and yes, I am telling the truth.
